Overview
Purpose
Handling Unit Management helps you define reusable packaging structures in Business Central, assign them to documents, and keep them consistent through posting. The solution combines packaging materials, contents, rules, and logistics processes into one end-to-end handling model for handling units.
Who is this documentation for?
This documentation is written for end users in operational roles who work with packaging processes every day:
- Shipping and picking
- Goods receipt and warehouse operations
- Sales and purchasing document processing
- Key users responsible for packaging master data
The content is structured so teams with limited Business Central experience can follow and apply the processes reliably.
Business value
- Models multi-level packaging structures with packaging materials, accessories, and contents in a consistent way.
- Assigns standard and alternative structures automatically to sales, purchase, and transfer documents.
- Considers fill quantities, weights, and packaging rules already during structure definition.
- Supports operational processes such as shipping, goods receipt, transfer, and pick-and-pack scenarios.
- Connects packaging assignments with the standard Business Central logic for lots, expiration dates, and reservations.
Content focus
Packaging structures as reusable templates
Packaging structures are described once and then reused on master data or documents. This keeps recurring scenarios such as pallets, KLTs, mixed packaging, or accessory structures consistent across processes.
Automatic assignment in document processes
The solution determines the most suitable packaging structure for each document line from the available context. Alternatives can also be maintained so that customer-specific or process-specific packaging variants can be selected explicitly.
Validation, release, and traceability
Rules for quantities, hierarchy depth, and structure types help ensure that only consistent packaging structures are released and used. During packaging assignment registration, weights, tracking information, and document-specific packaging data are also carried forward in a traceable way.
